7/10/2009: Swire oilfield services invests in north sea (Published by Åsmund)
7 October 2009

Swire Oilfield Services, a leading supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units (CCU), is defying market conditions by establishing Aberdeen, UK as a Centre of Excellence for its Cargo Carrying business with a £750,000 investment, creating five jobs.

Work has already begun on the new paint curing facility at the company’s fleet refurbishment workshop in Aberdeen. The three acre site is scheduled for completion on the 1st of December and once fully operational, personnel including shot blasters and painters will be hired to service the new hub.

The workshop will complement Swire’s existing £1.4 million workshop which was opened in August 2008. The site was constructed to accommodate increasing demands for CCU refurbishment of the company’s UK-based and supported rental units, allowing Swire’s experienced and skilled employees to repair, weld and paint its extensive UK fleet from a single location

The paint curing service centre will use the latest generation of gas catalytic infra red heaters to reduce paint curing times and ensure the most effective paint coating life is delivered. It will also increase Swire’s workshop capacity, allowing the company to add to its own maintenance regime as part of its commitment to continually improving all areas of its business.  Swire can also extend its ability to work with customers who operate their own fleet of units, allowing them to cost effectively maintain their units to the highest standards as part of a managed programme.

Inline with the company’s focus on safety, its is concreting of the entire workshop yard which will have substantial benefits for the operation of fork-lifts and align Aberdeen with Swire’s other bases.

This investment is part of the Swire’s constant push for development during the current economic downturn. The company recently acquired Australia based Weir OCI which took investment in the region to more than £15 million in the past year.

Rupert Bray, Swire Oilfield Services general manager, said: “We are entering a new phase of rapid expansion and this investment will support our overseas growth, as well as our ongoing operations in the North Sea sector. The funds outlaid in the past 13 months shows we are committed to the North East and see it as an integral part of our core business.”

Swire Oilfield Services operations manager UK, Andy Yule, added: “Safety and quality are of the utmost importance to us and. the working environment on our operating bases sends this strong message to our employees and our customers. Investing in the base infrastructure not only

Swire Santa gives a helping hand for local children’

On the 15th of December, staff at Swire Oilfield Services proudly handed over 100 Secret Santa gifts for local boys and girls of the North East to Michelle Herd at Cash for Kids.

Swire Oilfield Services’ staff gave up their traditional bottle and chose instead to donate the equivalent to Cash for Kids’ Christmas Appeal.  The appeal aims to provide a little cheer for the children in the Grampian region who are unfortunate enough to wake up on Christmas day with no presents.

Cash for Kids is Swire Oilfield Services’ nominated charity, and the staff of the Company have raised over £18,500 through various fundraising events during the year.  The total will top £20,000 by the end of year end.

Rupert Bray, Director & General Manager of Swire Oilfield Services, said “We are delighted to be able to offer a little cheer to those in our community for whom Christmas is less welcoming”

Michelle Herd, Charity Manager of Cash for Kids, added “It has been fantastic to work with and receive the tremendous and valued support of Swire Oilfield Services and, in addition to all their fundraising efforts over the year the Xmas Toy Appeal has just been boosted hugely by the generosity of all the management and staff. On behalf of all the children who will wake u

5/5/2009: Newest fleet product, SAFE TANK(Published by SuperUser Account)

Swire Oilfield Services has begun production on its most advanced offshore chemical tank. The square tank, dubbed the SAFE Tank from its working title of Swire Advanced Fluid Engineering (SAFE), is the latest result of the company's ongoing continuous improvement program, offering pioneering products to the energy industry. The first units were delivered to its Aberdeen headquarters last month.

The tank, protected by a worldwide patent, has undergone a rigorous design and safety assurance process. It is designed to carry a full range of oilfield chemicals, and has a working pressure of 2.67 bar and a test pressure of 4 bar.
The tank design has a reduced height and footprint through using more of the empty space in the frame. The smaller height minimizes the need for anyone to climb on top of the tank for operational or maintenance reasons.
The 1,000 UK gallon-capacity tank has dished ends, and with dimensions of 2300mm x 2300mm. The overall height is 1815mm, with dip and vent valves 1600mm from the floor. Another design innovation is the slotted fork-lifting pockets, which minimize the chances of dropping incidents.
Because of the partially dished ends, it uses less external frame stiffeners than other square tanks currently on the market, and is relatively light. It also has a provision for a dial-type level gauge to be installed. Additionally, the use of standard parts ensures the product is more cost effective for customers.
It is constructed using a type of stainless steel that is ideal for use in a marine environment, and is coated using a system devised jointly by Swire and Hempel Paints in Denmark, representing the first time both organisations have worked together.
This system reduces the amount of maintenance needed; cutting back on the blasting required, lowering energy consumption and material costs. This also means a decrease in the Volatile Organic Compounds produced.
Rupert Bray, Swire Oilfield Services Director and General Manager, said, "Swire pioneered square tanks over 20 years ago and this latest model, which has been four years in development, is the most advanced produced by the organization.
"The greatest advantage of the new tank is that it provides a large useable volume for the same capacity dimensions. The lower height makes stacking plus working on top of the unit easier and safer.
"We've already had a lot of interest in the tank from the industry, especially from major chemical companies. Mass production has begun this month."
